In 2020, the mortality percentage was 25.7% for Mississippi patients diagnosed with stroke. Stroke death rates in Mississippi remain 28.3% higher than the overall U.S. Rate.

 

Through funding from MHCA Acute Stroke Life Support (ASLS) training courses now are being taught regionally and offered regularly in MS to keep EMS, nurses, and physicians current with their acute stroke assessment skills for prehospital and hospital early recognition and treatment.

 

MHCA is leading the way in Emergency Stroke Care by providing:

  • Education of the public of stroke signs and symptoms; Dial 911
  • Free education to the multidisciplinary team regarding process improvement, registry data integrity, newest stroke technology and stroke care practices
  • Support for implementation of best care practices through funding, registry support, and technology grants
  • Increased field detection and management
  • Improved efficiencies in the emergency department to decrease time to treatment, including thrombolysis frequency for eligible patients
